So it's begun--the juggernaut birthday toast to the gravest comic dramatist who has ever lived. The Year of Beckett 2006 was rung in Kassel, Germany, on New Year's Eve. Everyone who ever waited by a stunted tree, recorded himself on tapes or buried bodies in beach sand has come out of the dark to profess, "We like you, Sam. We really like you. So will you please, please, please give Fiona Shaw and Deborah Warner another go at Godot? They didn't mean to upset your estate with their interpretations. (Well, maybe, just a teensy-weensy bit.)"
