It's always good to have the basics. When directors embark on the development of a new show, they should have on hand a bottle of water, a sense of humor and some resiliency. Things happen along the way, some weird, some unexpected; sometimes things are wonderful, often they are not. Perhaps the most essential single requisite for a director or choreographer working with a writer is to get it all in writing. Contracts and agreements are the roadmaps necessary to navigate the unpredictable terrain that developing a new musical might offer.
