LAST SUMMER I took a hike in Northern California with Susan H. Schulman, one of the first people I had met after I moved to New York City. As we started down the dirt path, she turned to me and asked, "Do you have your cell phone with you?" I thought, "Why in the world would we need a cell phone out here in the Redwoods?"
