100 YEARS AGO (1906)

The San Francisco earthquake destroys all but 1 of the city's 11 theatres. Benefit performances and spectacles are immediately organized across the country. George M. Cohan sells newspapers on the streets of New York, raking in as much as $1,000 a paper. Sarah Bernhardt organizes a benefit tour. The city of Boston suspends its Sunday-performance ban to allow James K. Hackett to offer a benefit show.
