It was 2002 and there was a lot of post-9/11 flag-waving going on. The tenor of the times had Aaron Posner wondering: "What do we really mean by all this talk about the American spirit?" Then the Philadelphia-based director ran across a copy of a rare Mark Twain story--and bought it on impulse, thinking that the quintessential American writer might help him gain some perspective on the patriotic fervor.
