70 YEARS AGO (1936)

Across the country, the Federal Theatre Project launches 22 simultaneous openings of an adaptation of Sinclair Lewis's novel It Can't Happen Here, including Yiddish, Spanish and all-black productions. The play envisions what might happen if America elects fascist rulers to high government offices. Public officials impede its openings in many cities because Republicans charge that the show is liberal propaganda for coming elections. Still, it will be seen by over 500,000 people in 17 venues nationwide.
