115 YEARS AGO (1881)
Sarah Bernhardt, the capricious French stage actress, reaches the midway mark of her first American tour (which she began in October 1880 and will conclude in May 1881). She travels as far west as Kansas City and as far south as New Orleans, igniting social commentary along the way, with performances in such plays as Jeanne d'Arc, Frou-Frou, Theodora, Cleopatra and La Dame aux Camelias.
