Re: Your coverage of Mother Courage ("Drenched and Euphoric in Central Park," Nov. '06): Antiwar plays, from Arms and the Man to Mother Courage and beyond, were a response to romantic militarism--to the view that war was heroic and noble and patriotic.

The theatre public of the 21st century does not need this response: They know that war is hell; they don't need to be told this by playwrights.
What, if anything, do they need to be told?
