ARTIST AND ACTIVIST ROBERT KARIMI GREW UP IN THE BAY AREA WATCHING PBS cooking programs with his Guatemalan mother, who filtered her husband's Persian recipes through her own Central American kitchen techniques. Years later, an epiphany: Cooking shows, in which cultural differences are embraced, could provide a vocabulary for discussing social change. Preparing comfort foods, for example, is an occasion to examine conflicting views about "what is good for you, what is bad for you, what makes us comfortable."
