LA JOLLA, CALIF.: Growing up in the Fillmore district of San Francisco in the 1980s, hip-hop theatre artist Will Power was trying to switch his trade from poppin' to rhyming when he came upon the drama classes of Judith Holton, a former dancer for the late avant-garde musician Sun Ra. Those classes, geared toward kids, centered on plays that she wrote and directed--Afrocentric educational sci-fi children's-theatre stuff, where animals talked and black men might fly in outer space.
