Brookhaven budget is still a political football.
It's been a rough winter with the price shocks during January and February of 2000. Oil heat research at Brookhaven National Laboratory hasn't been a walk in the park, either. It never is, or at least it seems that way. Recently we interviewed Roger MacDonald, the senior oil heat research program manager at the laboratory, to find out what's been happening.
Without BNL's research results that the oil heating industry has put into practice over the last 20 years, this last. winter would have been even worse. The average national fuel oil consumption per house before 1975 was more than 1,400 gallons per year, and more than 1,600 in New England.
