According to data collected by the Hearth Products Association, a total of 1,689,545 hearth appliances were shipped in the United States during 2000 -1,043,213 gas appliances, 609,332 cordwood appliances and 37,000 pellet appliances. On a percentage basis, 62 percent of the hearth units shipped during 2000 used gas, 36 percent used cordwood, and 2 percent used pellet fuel. Between 1999 and 2000, shipments of cordwood units (cordwood fireplaces, freestanding wood stoves and fireplace inserts) declined 23 percent, from 795,767 in 1999 to 609,332 by 2000, while gas unit shipments (gas fireplaces, freestanding gas stoves, fireplace inserts and gas fireboxes) increased 8 percent, from 967,529 to 1,043,213.
