Established in 1953, Adrian Steel began as a small structural steel business, selling beams, girders and trusses. Founded by Robert B. Westfall, a former All-American fullback at the University of Michigan and an All-Pro fullback with the Detroit Lions, Adrian Steel has become a major force in the van and light duty truck equipment industry. Today, Adrian Steel's facility encompasses 166,900 square feet, with over 300 permanent employees.

It wasn't until 1963 that Adrian Steel produced its first van interior. At that time, service vans were a new concept and a firm from Ohio approached Adrian Steel to produce sheet metal bins and interior storage units for a fleet of Ford Econoline vans.
