In July, Burt's Reliable, Inc., located in Southold, N.Y., became the first heating oil company on Long Island to provide an alternative to traditional fuel oil. On July 21, Burt's Reliable accepted its inaugural load of soybean oil, which will be blended with standard heating oil to provide bioheat.
The soybean oil is made from domestically grown beans. It is a clean-burning, low-emissions oil product. Bioheat has been tested in labs throughout the United States and has become a mainstream home-heating alternative in the Midwest. It is now available in the Northeast.
