OGC spotlights hazard mapping, critical infrastructure. (Government Connection).(Open GIS Consortium, Federal Emergency Management Agency)

Wayland, Mass.-based Open GIS Consortium Inc. (OGC) and its industry partners have been working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to develop a technology framework for sharing geographic data related to natural hazards.

OGC's FEMA-sponsored initiative, called the Multi-Hazard Mapping Initiative Phase 1 (MMI-1), hit a major milestone in spring 2002 with the successful demonstration of the framework's capability on May 9, 2002. The demonstration used a standards-based framework for the discovery, access and distribution of multihazard map data. OGC leaders now are seeking to enlist additional federal, state and local agencies to plan and develop the framework further.
