More than 5 million aerial photographs of World War II were made publicly available via the Internet on Jan. 19, 2004, at http://www.evidenceincamera.co.uk. Taken by the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force (RAF), they were used by Allied commanders to help devise their strategy during the six-year conflict.

The pictures cover events such as D-Day, the Holocaust and the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck. The Web site was created by the Aerial Reconnaissance Archives at Keele University, Staffordshire, United Kingdom.
"These images allow us to see the real war at firsthand--as if we are RAF pilots," said Allan Williams, project leader....
