The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is undergoing transformation from the map production business to a business of coordinating, encouraging and facilitating the creation of a distributed National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI).

The creation of the National Geospatial Program Office (NGPO) began this transformative process in fall 2004, and a detailed "Plan for Action" was released in late April 2005. The plan contains several dramatic actions with the express purpose of speeding NSDI creation. This month's "Government Connection" (page 14) details the elements of these changes.
