Commercial imagery providers partner.(DigitalGlobe Inc. partnering with U.S. Geological Survey )

Commercial satellite-imagery firms DigitalGlobe, Longmont, Colo., and GeoEye, Dulles, Va., joined forces with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to support the global team of space and satellite agencies that constitute the International Charter, "Space and Major Disasters," which works to provide free emergency-response satellite data to those affected by disasters worldwide (see www.disasterscharter.org).

According to Barbara J. Ryan, USGS associate director for geography and current chair of the International Charter, the charter has been activated approximately 125 times since its inception in November 2000, including in the United States for Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
