The cost of complying with the In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) Directive is so high that some smaller IVD companies are planning to reduce the number of European markets they serve. This could mean reduced competition. This is one of the findings of a survey conducted by PRTM into how companies ate responding to the Directive.

PRTM surveyed a cross-section of diagnostic companies with combined European revenues of more than 1 billion [euro] and global sales of more than 2.5 billion [euro]. To comply with the Directive, 50% of respondents plan to produce more than one packaging configuration and 33% said they will set up a deferred labelling operation. A significant number of companies are also introducing centralised European distribution as well as inventory...
