The prevailing imbalance in the buyer-seller relationship is threatening access of innovative medical technologies to patients. Proposed steps to remedy the situation are outlined here.

Urgent need for reform

Over the past 10 years, certain hospital group purchasing organisations (GPOs), rather than clinicians, have been playing an increasing role in determining which products are best for hospitals and patients. These decisions have often been based on the GPO's own financial well being and not on the well being of their member hospitals or the patients they serve. Based on these developments, the need for reforms in the GPO market place has never been greater.
