Hillsborough County, Florida, has developed a comprehensive recycling program to divert waste from landfill sites and save energy by reducing the fossil fuels needed to extract and manufacture new products. This effort includes a recycling and composting program that collects materials such as aluminum cans, plastic bottles, newspapers, office paper, wood, and leaves.
The program has allowed the county to avoid nearly 800,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
