Music Industry Holds Its Own, RIAA Statistics Show

Despite a flat national economy, statistics released by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) reveal that between January and July 1991, the music industry has held its own. Music sales of $3,490.87 million, in all formats, reported for the first six months of 1991 reflect a 0.18% increase in dollar revenue over the same period in 1990. However, units were reported down 11.1% for the same period, from 424.08 million units in 1990 to 377.08 million units in 1991. This is in contrast to the 10.8% increase in units for the same period between 1989 and 1990.
