Two of the most controversial aspects of the next generation of optical disc technology continue to generate both heat and smoke, but relatively little light.

Divx, a technology-cum-marketing scheme joint venture between retailer Circuit City and entertainment law firm Ziffren, Brittenham, Branca & Fischer, will allow consumers to rent a DVD-type video disc with a 48-hour viewing window for about $4 and allow additional plays for additional cost unlocked via a modem connection to the specialized Divx player.
