More than two years after DVD-Video players and software titles first shipped to retailers in the U.S. and Japan, it's anybody's guess how the struggle for dominance in writable DVD will shake out. The industry consensus is that digital video recorders will be the "killer app" for DVD that helps consumers finally make the switch from their trusty VCRs. Unfortunately, there is still no agreement on which format should lead the charge. Several rewritable DVD formats, each of them promoted by a different set of players in the industry, are still jockeying for position.
