U.S. DVD Forum Conference offers optimism for DVD formats.

The weather (115 degrees Fahrenheit) wasn't the only thing that was hot at last month's U.S. DVD Forum Conference in Palm Springs, CA. The opportunity that the high density DVD format will afford U.S.-based replicators over the next few years is also sizzling, according to Jim Bottoms of market research firm Understanding & Solutions.

The number of DVDs manufactured in the U.S. will grow from 311 million discs in 1999 to 1.5 billion in 2003, Bottoms predicted. To support that demand, the number of DVD lines installed in the U.S. will have to grow from a current installed base of less than 100 lines to more than 600 by 2003.
