The first streaks of dawn are beginning to softly illuminate the deserted streets of a factory district in Suffolk County, on the eastern end of Long Island. At five a.m., nearing the end of the 'lobster shift' -- as New York City police officers refer to the third overnight tour of duty -- a patrolman out of Suffolk County's Fifth Precinct steers down one of these quiet, industrial streets, where red brick buildings full of machinery and the men who run them will start to hum in a few hours.
