The battle over dominance in the writable DVD market is just about ready to truly start...

The action on the writable DVD front is finally starting to heat up in Japan, where Pioneer launched a DVD-RW video recorder in December of last year, and Matsushita announced a DVD-RAM model, to be launched in Japan in late June for $2300 (the same price point as Pioneer's model).

The catch, at least in the case of Pioneer's version, is that there is no "digital input" (Matsushita has not announced if its model has one or not). This is because the Copy Protection Technical Working Group has not yet finalized copy protection for writable DVD. Pioneer has reportedly sold 25,000 units of its DVD-RW recorder.
