Sony Unveils 1.3GB CD.(Brief Article)

Tape-Disc Business, July, 2000

Sony Corp. has developed three new disc formats that double the data capacity of CD-ROM, CD-R and CD-RW media to 1.3GB from the current 650 MB, according to a report in AsiaBizTech. The new formats are tentatively named Double Density CD-ROM/-R/-RW, or DDCD for short.

The DDCD formats achieve the 1.3GB data capacity through an extended error correction scheme (CIRC) and address format, as well as shorter track-pitch and minimum pit length. The media will not play on existing CD drives without an upgrade to the laser pickup.

Sony is a co-licensor of existing CD technology, along with Philips.
