October 26, 2000. It's a date that hardcore videogame players in North America waited for for quite some time. It was the day that PlayStation 2 (PS2), arguably the most-hyped videogame console ever, was officially launched.

Certainly, you know by now why the PS2 launch was so exciting. More than 27 million units of PS2's predecessor, PlayStation, have been sold in the U.S. since it was launched in 1995, and more than 75 million worldwide. If PS2 lives up to its hype, it may well eclipse those numbers.

PS2 is the first game console based on the DVD format, and plays DVD-Video titles along with original PlayStation and PS2 games. The fact that PS2 plays movies is certainly good news for DVD replicators, as more DVD-Video titles will be sold.
