Nearly four years ago, when Carol Flaherty became Macrovision's director of copy-protection business and licensing programs, she was "totally unfamiliar" with copy protection. Today, she's part and parcel of the leading edge.

Her copy-protection philosophy is simple: "You can't have enough of it." And her efforts match her beliefs: Flaherty and Macrovision were instrumental in removing certain Apex DVD players from retail shelves. "It had a menu that could turn off CSS, the regional coding, and Macrovision. We informed the chip manufacturer this was totally unacceptable. Today, Apex is one of our better licensees," she says. "They were really not aware."
