Toshiba and NEC are proposing a new next-generation optical disc to the DVD Forum, in hopes of demonstrating art advantage over the Blu-Ray disc proposed by a consortium including Sony, Philips, Matsushita, Pioneer and others.

The companies said their proposed format would allow existing DVD manufacturing equipment to be used, minimizing the investments required for a transition to a new high-definition format. For example, the new discs would be made by bonding two 0.6mm substrates, the same method used for the current generation of DVDs. In addition to the capacity advantages of shorter-wavelength blue lasers, the companies said the format uses new signal-processing and phase-change recording technology.
