Austria has never been a great tea drinking country, and the consumption of tea is fairly stable at approximately 160g per person per year. The beverage is mainly consumed for breakfast and in the early evening with a cold meal. There is a marked difference in tea drinking habits in summer and winter -- Austrians mainly drink tea during the cold months each year. Indeed, tea is a popular gift item for Christmas, and is available in a wide variety of gift packages. The majority of tea is drunk at home although more and more catering outlets are slowly starting to offer a variety of tea blends.
