Oaxaca, the capital of the state of the same name, sits 5,000 feet above sea level, offering cool weather year-round. Here, monuments to great civilizations are part of daily modern life, since Oaxaca is blessed with some of the most interesting colonial architecture in Mexico.

Ornate buildings, churches, elegant archways, balconies, decorative grill work and plazas are a feast for the eyes. Further color is added by a deep-rooted indigenous heritage, imprinted by 17 different native groups living in the Oaxaca Valley. These people still practice an ancient way of life, which has been transmitted over generations from pre-Hispanic times, when the city was the center of the Mixtec and Zapotec civilization.
