Beyond the abundance of natural beauty of the Big Island are the innovations both ancient and modern that have been wrought by Hawaiians and newer waves of immigrants. For the former, consider the centuries-old lava-rock wall that stands at Puuhonua o Honaunau, a coastal national park. Skilled craftspeople assembled it without mortar, not to mention Bronze Age tools. And yet it is smooth-faced and as solidly assembled as a jigsaw puzzle.
