WASHINGTON -- The groundswell of anti-GDS sentiment brought on by airlines' booking fees and by the competition of new online travel sites has finally forced the hand of the global distribution systems, which are now rethinking how they operate.

It is not enough any more to promise to add new Web-faring tools to the mix to give agents what they have been clamoring for: access to Internet fares. The entire pricing structure is now being called into question and will be examined lest the GDSs find themselves with no relevant part to play in tomorrow's distribution system.
