Until about 15 years ago, the Fijian Islands were a secret that Australian and New Zealand Yachters and back-packers kept to themselves. In those days, the resorts that did exist were mainly three-star affairs, and Air Pacific mostly contented itself with serving the lands down under. Then came an infusion of money to build the five-star complex known as the Denarau Island Resort; Shangri-La opened; and Nadi, besides being just a gateway, became something of a resort/tourism hub. Investors soon began opening ultra-luxurious boutiques on little islands in the Yasawan and Mamanuccan chains, and the Fijian honeymoon market was off and running.
