If asked to name great romantic destinations in the Pacific, most travelers would probably list Tahiti and Fiji right off the bat. And why not? Both of those countries offer top-notch romantic resort products: islands, turquoise waters, candlelight dinners and balmy tropical temperatures. But they aren't the only destinations in that part of the world that can boast such features.

Australia has the same conditions as Tahiti and Fiji in its tropical north, especially in the area surrounding Cairns and in the Whitsunday Islands off the Queensland coast. However, Australia also offers an urban component that no other Pacific destination (except New Zealand) can sell, with the great city of Sydney serving as the gateway from the U.S.
