WASHINGTON -- Last week United Airlines slashed many domestic walk-up fares by 40 percent and seven-day advance purchases by 70 percent, in what it calls a "structural reform" of its economy-class fares. But the move is receiving a cold reception from travel industry executives, who say the changes do not represent needed fare reforms.

The reaction stems from United's unveiling on Jan. 6 of a fare initiative it says is a response to business traveler demands for "affordability, availability and flexibility." Under the changes, United now offers a 40 percent discount on unrestricted and refundable economy-class walk-up fares and 70 percent on seven-day advance purchases. The coach tickets also allow automatic upgrades to United's premium economy seats. ...
