Few images evoke a spirit of romance and adventure as acutely as a castle. That particularly holds true in Ireland, a country where the legends of saints, scholars and fairies of long ago remain almost eerily present. Fortunately, a number of properties exist that provide just such a transporting experience.

Just a few minutes away from Shannon Airport among the hills and villages of County Clare, for example, sits stately Dromoland Castle. Ireland's Gaelic royalty runs deep at Dromoland: The castle was the ancestral home of the O'Brien clan, which traces its roots back to Brian Boru, an 11th-century High King of Ireland.
