Cozumel keeps toiling away to reach its goal of regaining business and strengthening markets. More scheduled and charter flights, and a growing number of all-inclusive properties bode well for the area's growth.

Since the first of the year, occupancy rates have maintained a 65 percent average, and the length of stay per room has increased by 18 percent, says Javier Aranda, manager of the Cozumel Tourism Trust. "And compared to last year, when prices had to be reduced [following Sept. 11, 2001], we've recouped our room rate levels by 12 percent," he adds. In 2002, 250,000 tourists stayed at hotels in Cozumel, a slightly lower number than in 2001, and the goal is to increase that number by 110 percent in 2003, says Aranda.
