Fermilab Expansion.(Brief Article)

World Tunnelling, September, 1999

Universities Research Association, which operates and manages Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory under contract to the U.S. government, is seeking prequalification of construction contractors for its neutrinos at the main injector (NuMI) expansion project. This involves construction of 4,000 ft of horseshoe tunnels ranging from 12 to 30 ft span to a depth of 325 ft with two access shafts 22 ft diameter to 125 ft and 325 ft depths.

Three enclosures are to be created within the tunnels. The ground is described as glacial soils, dolomite limestone and shales and the proposed method is drill/blast. Award is expected in October, 1999 with notice to proceed December, 1999 for completion in August, 2001.
