Balfour Beatty is using a unique, purpose-built mobile gantry for the construction of a concrete tunnel on the [pound]5.2 billion Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) at Mersham in Kent.

Designed and built by A-Plant Acrow at its Colnebrook and Romford hire locations in London, the mobile gantry provides a safe platform to form and set a concrete cur and cover tunnel along 155 m of track on the CTRL.

The new railway is being constructed alongside the existing Ashford to Folkestone line, which currently carries Eurostar and other national rail services. The A-Plant gantry provides the ideal solution to this limited access contract, removing the danger posed by the passing trains, and ensuring that services are not interrupted by the work.
