The U.S. Department of Education (ED) awards a variety of discretionary grants that provide funding opportunities for ASHA researchers in areas such as personnel preparation, improved services, and technology. ASHA had urged the ED to allocate funding opportunities for technical assistance for low-incidence populations--in particular the training of speech-language pathologists in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) and other assistive technology related to communication.
