Ludell Mfg. Co.'s "mini" water heater, the Direct Contact Water Heater (DCWH), is designed to evenly distribute incoming cold water with a spray nozzle located above the heat-transfer medium. The water contacts the ascending hot gases, absorbing the heat. That is, the process water is heated directly by the combustion exhaust of the natural/propane gas burner.

Serving as the burner combustion's exhaust path, the DCWH's heating chamber is an upright cylinder. The burner is located about one-third of the way from the heater bottom, and directly above the heater storage tank from which heated water is pumped.
