SANTA CLARA, Cal.--Intel Corp., apparently sensing other chip makers nipping at its heels with rival microprocessors, is about to take the PC industry to the next level.

It is unveiling the P6 chip, which it touts as twice as fast as the fastest Pentium chip, which happens to be the fastest chip available today for IBM platforms.

The P6 introduction comes as rivals Advanced Micro Devices, with its K5, and Cyrix Corp. ready their versions of 586 processors, chips that can compete with Pentium on Windows platforms.

Pentium-based computer systems are selling well at the retail level, despite the recent controversy over the flaw in the chip. However, 486-based systems still outsell Pentium and are expected to stay that way until midyear, according to...
