The Federal Communications Commission raised more than $7.7 billion earlier this month through its auction of 99 licenses for advanced wireless communications--called Personal Communications Services (PCS)--that transmit voice, data and images over the airwaves.
Two licenses were offered in each of 51 metropolitan areas, with one license each in New York, Los Angeles and Washington not auctioned but set aside for the three companies that received Pioneer Preferences last year for pioneering the technology.
Auctions for the broadband spectrum lasted more than three months.
Pioneers will pay a fee of 85 percent of the average price per person bid in the top 10 markets.
