Intel Corp. will soon present two new Pentium chips and cut prices on others to entice computer makers from its widely used 486 chip. The new products include Intel's fastest chip yet for notebook computers, a Pentium model that operates at a speed of 90MHz and will be released in late May, according to the trade magazine PC Week.
In June, Intel will reportedly release an even faster Pentium for desktop systems. Intel wants to hurry customers to the Pentium, which faces little competition compared with the 486.
The company believes demand from personal-computer makers will allow Intel to convert most of its production to the Pentium by the end of the year, though it will continue to make 486s if PC makers want them, the spokesman said.
