Sales of licensed home furnishings reached $787 million in 1994, on overall record growth for licensed merchandise. The biggest growth occurred in housewares. Classic characters continue to drive the business, but predicting the next classic hit is unpredictable. Cartoons and toys are safer bets than feature films, although 'Batman Forever' and 'Pocahontas' should be the big hits of 1995.

NEW YORK--As the entertainment industry rides the swell of ever-bigger successes, home furnishings licensed sales are being pulled along too.

Fueled by the runaway success of Disney's The Lion King and Saban's Power Rangers, which each approached $1 billion at retail, entertainment licensed merchandise scored overall record growth in 1994.
