ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--EchoStar Communications Corp., a C-band hardware manufacturer that plans to offer a direct-broadcast service, has signed a long-term agreement with Home Box Office for HBO and Cinemax programming. A leading maker of big-dish satellite TV systems worldwide, EchoStar is developing a small-dish-antenna satellite service to compete with the Digital Satellite System developed by Thomson and DirecTv. EchoStar says it will carry more than 250 channels of digital, video, audio and data services when the system is fully implemented in mid-1996.
