Windows 95, Microsoft's latest version of its operating system for personal computers, was launched on Aug 24, 1995, together with numerous promotional offers, contests and events. Several stores were open at midnight that day to cater to buyers anxious to try the new product. The launch was heavily advertised by Microsoft and by retailers. Among the incentives offered with the purchase of Windows 95 were long distance telephone call discounts, subscriptions to online services and discounted airline tickets.

Computer and software retailers rolled out the red carpet last week for the release of Windows 95, which, after months of anticipation and delays, was one of the most hyped product launches in consumer history.
